Solid shorts. I'm in between sizes and went down. I might recommend the same. For reference I'm 6'3 230 with big legs and wear a 36 waist jean. I went large and it fits well. I agree with other poster, velcro is a little too high for taller guys. They definitely could lower it and I think everyone would still be happy.

Is there straps that hold cup in place or just a pocket?

There are no straps to hold the cup in place. I bought this and wore it one icetime and threw it in the garbage. The cup doesnt stay in place and covers everything except what it is meant to protect. Terrible design for hockey.
